Today we left the backpackers nice and early, it was cloudy and a bit of rain but we decided to make a move anyway. Our goal was to go to Cape Reinga via ninety mile beach and camp the night around there....
We jumped onto ninety mile beach right at the beginning and our timing was perfect, the tide was just going out!! What a stunning ride, we drove all the way to the very end of the ninety mile beach which, I might add, is not 90 miles :) The name is also not derived from the speed limit since that is 100km... go figure!
We got to the end of the beach and tried to find a road leading back to the main road... impossible, all we found was a stream going inland where the map said there would be a road....
We put the car in 4w high and started driving up stream.... absolutely wicked!!!! this stream kept going more and more inland and just when we thought we were going crazy and wanted to go back we noticed some tire tracks and thus kept on trucking only to end up at the side of massive sand dunes and the main road... in the end.
Stunning ride, no doubt about it... a MUST DO!!
We checked out Cape Reinga and enjoyed the 2 oceans coming together creating very strange waves and currents. A few km from there there was a turn going down the hill and it said there was a camping ground there.... we checked it out and it is right at the beach with a gorgeous view... so we stayed :o)
Just cooked some dinner and now we are having a nice Milton Chardonnay we picked up from a winery in Gisborne on one of the first days of our trip.
Time for some more wine and then off to bed!
